Josh Keyser
My family settled in southwest Idaho in the 1880s. I was raised in California and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at 18, serving five years in infantry, nuclear security, and military police roles. After an honorable discharge, I earned a business degree from Vanguard University and plan to attend University of Idaho College of Law. I moved to Boise in 2018, served as a police officer, and now work in education as a vice principal. My wife and I are raising our three children here. I value servant leadership and strengthening our community—Idaho is home.

Give us your one-minute elevator speech for the campaign.
I’m a former Marine, police officer, and current vice principal, and I’ve served in local party leadership and now in the legislature. My motivation comes from recognizing where government oversteps constitutional limits, something I first saw during my military service. I believe it’s the duty of a patriot to protect the country from government overreach. With two legislative sessions behind me, I have the experience to continue standing firm against bad legislation while serving Idaho families like my own.
What are your top three priorities, and what would you act on first?
I focus on building coalitions to advance conservative priorities, even when it’s difficult. I’ve worked on legislation addressing illegal immigration and social issues, and I believe real change requires engaged citizens—calls, emails, and involvement matter. I approach the role with professionalism and a servant’s heart, working with those willing to show up and align. Whether it’s lowering taxes or solving infrastructure challenges, I focus on practical, creative solutions and building a shared vision with others in the legislature.
The party calls for reducing non-core state spending. Which programs would you cut or sunset, and what principles guide your budget decisions?
I view taxation as a direct impact on individual freedom, and lowering taxes is central to my approach. I support eliminating the income tax and reducing property taxes while advancing free-market solutions. I’ve supported cutting wasteful spending, including eliminating programs and reducing inefficiencies in education. We’ve already taken steps to correct inequities in programs like Medicaid. However, meaningful reform requires going further—beyond small cuts—and fundamentally rethinking how government spends taxpayer dollars.
Do you support education dollars following students to the school their parents choose, including private schools? Why or why not?
I fully support education dollars following the student, whether for homeschooling, private schools, or other alternatives. As a vice principal, I’ve seen firsthand that different students have different needs, and the current system does not serve them all well. The Constitution requires the state to provide education, but not in one specific way. Supporting parental choice ensures families can select the best environment for their children while improving overall outcomes.
Housing costs and property taxes are major concerns. What specific state actions would you support, and what tradeoffs are you willing—or not willing—to make?
I support lowering taxes broadly, including eliminating income tax and providing property tax relief. I also believe we should consider shifting toward a consumption-based tax system. However, we must ensure that essential services currently funded through property taxes are still supported. This will require creative, long-term solutions that balance tax relief with maintaining necessary public services.
What is your position on holding employers accountable for knowingly hiring undocumented workers in Idaho?
I strongly oppose illegal immigration and believe those who violate the law should be held accountable. It was disappointing that key legislation did not pass this session. Moving forward, we need stronger accountability, better transparency, and more reliable data to effectively address illegal immigration in Idaho.
What is your stance on the legalization of marijuana?
I strongly oppose the legalization of marijuana.
Medicaid costs are rising, and access remains a concern. What long-term reforms would you support to control costs, improve access, and protect taxpayers?
I support eliminating Medicaid expansion and implementing work requirements, along with stronger accountability and transparency for those receiving assistance. Government programs should be focused, efficient, and designed to encourage personal responsibility while protecting taxpayer resources.
Would you oppose multi-subject bills—even if you support part of them? Why or why not?
I fully support single-subject legislation and believe it is essential to transparency and good governance. It is already required by law in Idaho, and I will continue to uphold and defend that standard.
