Survey and Interview Responses
Why are you running for this office?
I want to make sure our city grows responsibly in a way that protects our quality of life.
What are your qualifications?
I live in Star and want to be more involved.
If elected, what are your goals?
My goals are responsible growth, and to ensure housing opportunities for families in our community. I also stand behind law enforcement, giving them the support they need to keep our neighborhoods safe.
What experience do you have serving on boards, commissions, non-profits, etc. where you have been of service to others?
I served as PTA president for 5 years. I feel it fosters a stronger school community by improving student outcomes and providing a platform for parents, teachers, and staff
Do you consider yourself fiscally conservative?
Yes. l believe in limited government intervention, lower taxes, and reduced government spending.
Do you consider yourself socially conservative?
Yes. I have a strong belief in established values and customs that historically defined society.
What do you believe is the most pressing issue facing our city right now, and how would you address it?
Star is experiencing insane growth, necessitating strong, thoughtful leadership. These leaders will be crucial in guiding the city’s direction and ensuring effective representation when collaborating with Middleton or other municipalities.
Affordable housing is a huge concern. What are your plans to address this?
Since moving here in 2020, Star’s population has exploded from approximately 10,000 to 40,000. This growth has made housing affordability a significant challenge. I have seen it personally – my children are struggling to buy homes in the area due to exorbitant prices. I value Star’s small-town feel, and it’s crucial that we preserve it amidst this rapid expansion.
Considering infrastructure when new subdivisions are developed is essential. Sidewalks, streets, schools, and other vital infrastructure often seem overlooked. While I’m unsure of the solutions for affordability, it’s a pressing issue, particularly for families
How will you ensure transparency in your decisions?
Effective leadership in Star requires openness to collaboration with leaders from neighboring cities like Middleton and Eagle. It is essential to actively listen to constituents and demonstrate genuine care for the people of Star.
What are your spending priorities?
Star’s budget, currently capped at 8%, needs a complete overhaul. Given the rapid population growth, this allocation seems insufficient. Long-term residents are observing this swift expansion, and it appears the City of Star has proceeded without fully considering the consequences of these various developments.
What are your thoughts on raising taxes?
While taxes have decreased over time, a new levy has been introduced. These resources are crucial so if we need to raise taxes or pass a special levy for our city is needs to happen.
In your view, what are two essential leadership qualities?
The most important quality for leadership is to really listen to people. People feel unheard, and they aren’t acknowledged. We need, as a city government, the input of the people. A second quality is the ability to make deliberate and transparent decisions regarding public spending.
Final Comments
As a Montana native, I cherish Star’s unique small-town charm and worry about its potential loss. We must diligently monitor development, especially regarding neighborhoods and zoning, to preserve Star’s true identity and integrity. It would be deeply saddening to see us lose what makes our community special.
To prevent this, we need to clearly communicate the rationale behind our projects. I’ve frequently sought answers from the City Council without success, and I am determined to change this lack of responsiveness.
