Jeff Wood

Jeff Wood

My wife and I are raising four children; our eldest is deaf, and our youngest is adopted. We cherish our children and our two grandchildren. Professionally, I am a nationally certified sign language interpreter, while my wife, a retired court reporter, now enjoys her new career in real estate. I deeply understand the four essential pillars of local government: law enforcement, responsible budgeting, parks and recreation, and balancing diverse growth with respect for property rights. I am a devoted husband, father, and a passionate lover of my city.

Survey and Interview Responses

Why are you running for this office?

I’m close with the entire City Council. They’ve all emphatically asked me to run in order to maintain the conservative strength we currently have. I don’t want that to change and want to be a part of keeping our quality of life.

What are your qualifications?

As a church leader, I successfully managed the social, spiritual, and economic well-being of 425 individuals. I was solely responsible for accurate financial oversight and accountability, and I oversaw and managed multiple subordinate organizations. Additionally, I have owned and successfully sold several profitable businesses.

If elected, what are your goals?

I love how our city is currently being managed. I would like to be a part of contributing to Star’s timely and appropriate growth. I’m also interested in exploring innovative opportunities to be more recognized with different activities…like a triathlon, skateboarding competition, marathon, etc.

What experience do you have serving on boards, commissions, non-profits, etc. where you have been of service to others?

I’m currently serving on the City of Star Impact Advisory Board. I’m also the Chaplain for Ada County Sheriff’s Office.

Do you consider yourself fiscally conservative?

YES. My wife and I are both very fiscally conservative. Nothing is spent without both of us agreeing. Our house is almost paid for. All other possessions have been paid with cash…no debt!

Do you consider yourself socially conservative?

I appreciate the diversity of individuals and groups, but I believe that outlying perspectives should not influence my conservative values.

What do you believe is the most pressing issue facing our city right now, and how would you address it?

One significant concern is managing growth at a correct pace, ensuring it is neither too rapid nor too slow. A methodical approach to growth is crucial for making informed decisions, and diversity in growth is equally important. For instance, a city composed solely of apartments or million-dollar homes is undesirable. Ultimately, good growth also creates opportunities for service.

Affordable housing is a huge concern. What are your plans to address this?

Affordable housing is a pressing concern for everyone, and while I don’t have a definitive solution yet, I am committed to learning and evolving to address this issue. I care deeply about my city and its sustainable growth.

How will you ensure transparency in your decisions?

As an extroverted individual, I love connecting with people. I am eager to learn and grow. I believe in honest, transparent communication, readily sharing public information while also listening. I plan to use platforms like Facebook to connect with the community. I am frequently seen in the community, known as “the guy who rides the horse.”

What are your spending priorities?

I am conservative when it comes to budgeting. I believe my responsibility with finances will transfer to my position on the council. I am committed to exploring innovative strategies to increase revenue and optimize spending.

What are your thoughts on raising taxes?

As a member of a Star subcommittee, I’m currently involved in a feasibility study focused on identifying alternative revenue streams. Our goal is to generate income without burdening current residents with increased taxes, which is an approach I strongly support.

What are your thoughts on adding business to bring in more tax revenue?

Having owned several small businesses, I understand the importance of supporting them. It is crucial to attract and foster the growth of more small businesses in our community.

In your view, what are two essential leadership qualities?

A good leader is a good listener. There is a difference between a sheepherder and a shepherd. A sheepherder leads from behind and a shepherd leads from the front and the sheep follow him. I try to do what is right and not make mistakes, while I recognize that sometimes I do make mistakes. Be a leader that people will be willing to listen to.
