Derek James Smith

For far too long, good people have remained indifferent while radical progressives have taken over city governments across America. I am no longer willing to stand by and watch as our cities become unsafe, and unaffordable. As a father of two young girls, I wish to push back against the progressive policies that have destroyed so many of our nation’s great cities.

Survey and Interview Responses

Why are you running for this office?

I want to prevent the liberals from turning Boise into a Seattle, Portland, LA, or any other city which has seen a decrease in quality of life due to progressive policies.

What are your qualifications?

I have an unbridled passion to create a better future for my daughters. My years as a sales professional taught me how to befriend all. I have an energy and a passion to change the world around me.

If elected, what are your goals?

I want to employ pragmatic solutions for our growing population and eliminate red tape for housing projects. Re-define the “homelessness” problem as what it truly is – a crisis of drug addiction and mental illness.

What experience do you have serving on boards, commissions, non-profits, etc. where you have been of service to others?

Nothing yet.

Do you consider yourself fiscally conservative?

Financial responsibility should not only be for businesses and households, but the government as well.

Do you consider yourself socially conservative?

The liberalization of our society has had negative impacts on the family unit. Not only do we see rising rates of depression and anxiety amongst our youth, but young men have been abandoned by the progressives. We must reinstate the conservative structures and traditions to make Boise the greatest city in America.

In your view, what is the purpose of government?

To preserve liberty and protect freedom.

Do you have any ideas on how the Boise City Council could save money?

Using AI to simplify processes. Empowering civil servants to find improvement and efficiency and rewarding them for their findings. Reduce bureaucracy.

What do you see as the biggest challenges/priorities for Boise City Council?

The biggest challenge for the city council is trying to be productive within a bureaucracy that is focused on “the process” not “the solutions.” We need pragmatic solutions, and we need to implement them now.

How will you prioritize city spending, and which areas do you believe require more or less funding? Boise expanded its property tax request by 7.4%. How much should Boise’s budget grow per year without a vote of the people?

Reducing administrative bloat and implementing Ai solutions for clerical and It jobs could lead to immediate savings and reduce the number of people employed b the city. We have a spending problem, not an income problem.

My gut reaction is another government employee, absolutely not. I know Jerry Whitehead, and watched when he was appointed to ITD. I want to be like Jerry Whitehead because he’s a guy that wants to get things done. It matters who’s appointed. I’m concerned about appointing competence.

What would you do to support small businesses in Boise?

Stop the government from taking money out of your pocket before it hits your pocket. I don’t think small businesses are hurting in Boise, yet. really like Idaho’s government. To be honest I don’t know enough about policy. I will be meeting with Fred at IFF to talk about the numbers. I’m open and intending to seek people’s ideas and will ask experts if I don’t know something.

Should Boise continue pursuing the mayor’s objective of ensuring that every resident has access to a park within a ten-minute walk, given the need to increase property tax by 7.4% and a need for a levy?

There is nothing more permanent than a temporary government program. Eviction doubled from 2022 – 2023. I can see through the “feel good and included” atmosphere. In reality, people are getting poorer and homelessness is increasing. I see the radical liberals hate conservatives and want them dead.

There is a happy medium though. I’ve considered condominiums – they give the ability to own something at a cheaper cost for a smaller footprint. Not necessarily single-family homes. The true need here is to be pulling away from the apartments everywhere. There is a different mentality between renters and owners. Affordable housing for the citizens who take ownership and responsibility.

How would you handle the pride flag controversy between the current city council, the Idaho State Legislature, progressives, and religious conservatives?

.13% of the population identify as transgender and they make the pride flag a city flag? I think the pride flag for the city was more activism. I don’t think the majority of Boiseans agree that the pride flag should be a city flag. If people learned the history of the pride movement, they would discard it. Most kids grow out of transgender stuff, yet we’re pushing it down their throats. It is an affront to God.
